Lovers of American Girl – UNITE!

Once again, it is time for all of us – as lovers, long time buyers, and supporters of American Girl to unite.

For a while now I haven’t really been fond of what AG is doing. Discontinuing the Bitty Twin line, bringing in the Wellie Wishers (which, although are cute, do look like a Toys R Us brand), the new packaging, zip ties on their necks, and now get this – sewn on doll underwear.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am personally really upset in the direction AG is going – with the choices that are being made. The boxes we get our dolls in look so cheapy – it makes me feel like they’re something from Walmart. I’ve always loved their doll boxes and all their packaging – everything felt like a keepsake – like you were buying something super special.

Oh – and what I really can not stand – is that you can now buy American Girl products (dolls included) in Toys R Us and Kohls.
Now I know that a lot of people like that because they don’t have stores close by, but here’s the thing – AG is supposed to be special. I’d rather buy their stuff online than from a place like TRU or Kohls! Every time I see AG products in those stores my heart sinks. I feel like the special, keepsake, high quality of these dolls and products have died down.

And that is what I’m here to talk to you about…

American Girl hasn’t been the same for a long, long time. For years the quality has been leaving us, but I’ve never really thought about it all that much – until now. The historical outfits are too modernized, the packaging stinks (really, holes got in some of the outfits because of how they were packed), their movies are AWFUL now (seriously, where did their effort go? Samantha and Felicity are AMAZING movies!), they’re making their stories way too similar,Β and now we’re getting sewn on underwear?? Really??

I am going to be writing to AG – kindly telling them how I feel and asking for the quality AG to return.

I ask you to do the same. American Girl believes that girls can make a difference, right? Then let’s make a difference!
I believe that if we all work together that we can make a difference – I believe there is a chance that we can get quality AG back!

So please, send them a letter, write them an email – whatever works best for you! I only advise that you are kind in your letter – please don’t hate on them πŸ˜‰

And once you have decided to help – I ask that you put this button on your blog with a link back to this post and also share this post all around the blogosphere (or even Instagram and YouTube if you have those!) – the more people that see this, the more people we’ll get to participate. And the more people we get to participate – the bigger the chance we have to make a difference. πŸ™‚

Thank you all!

  • Amen, sister! I am SO happy you posted about this! AG used to have such great quality products, but the quality has greatly declined over the years. This makes me sad – when a new release used to come out, I would get so excited! Now I’m just kinda meh about it. This makes it hard to stay an AG fan. :\
Anyway, thank you for posting this! I am definitely taking a stand. πŸ™‚

P.S. Do you have any ideas as to what to put in the letter? I'm kinda at a loss as to what to actually say.

    • I’m exactly the same way! I used to die over everything and now I’m like – oh, that’s cute! If even that. XD
Thank YOU for going to take a stand! πŸ˜€
      ~Jaclynn~
P.S. I would just talk about how their quality used to be so amazing and how you don’t like what they’re doing. Share your feelings with them – tell them that you want their quality back. πŸ™‚

  • The quality of AG has DEFINITELY gone down. Their movies are horrible now. I will be writing to them, too. Thanks for the encouragement to make a difference!

  • Ditto! I’ve been saying that since Beforever, their clothes, while cute, don’t look historical for the most part! Sewn on underwear? That’s a low thing to do, honestly I’m not sure what they’re doing anymore. I’ll write them about it, but honestly, things being great never really lasts long. Change always has to happen even when it’s not wanted, which for me is ALL THE TIME, so I won’t have my hopes up. ?

    • I don’t know what they’re doing either, but I’m not happy. πŸ™
I see your point, but I think it’s worth a shot! Thanks for helping! πŸ˜€

      • I said honestly way too much LOL.
I think the quality in pets especially has gone down, not that they’ll fall apart, but now their stuffed animals look like stuffed animals you could’ve bought anywhere, not the perfect-for-doll-play animals we’re used to from AG. I hope they listen!

  • The quality HAS gone down. Personaly, I am happy to buy in Toys’R’us, but only because I dont have an AG store where I live, and ordering online costs more. I have not bought from AG in a VERY long time, almost two years, but I pretend I do, if you get what I mean. (I make wishlists, and so on.) Thank you for this, Jaclynn!

  • I am DEFINITELY posting about this and writing. Hey, what if there was a ‘International Send-DAte (or at least, an internet-ional blogger date)’ where everyone sends them at the exact same time so that they will all reach there within the same week. Kinda like a really massive boatload of letters…. It’d probably either make them listen or make them ignore us. :/

    • Thank you SO much! πŸ˜€
Hmm… It’s a good idea, but like you said – it might make them ignore us… Maybe getting several letters scattered around will make them read them more πŸ˜‰

  • I totally agree! From a collector’s POV buying most of the outfits aren’t even worth it anymore. I just go on Ebay and order Pleasant Company stuff! It’s older, but SO much better quality than the new stuff (which actually says a lot, and not in a good way :/) I will be writing them! πŸ™‚

  • I am outraged! I am so writing to AG!
Also, they’re selling them at sears, too!

  • OH MAN AMEN SISTER!!!!!!!!! I totally get what you mean! I can’t believe that! sewn on underwear???? I mean I love the boy doll, but seriously….. Wow. And I was totally disapointed with Lea. I loved Grace but Lea was just horrible!!!!! Her attitude!!! I will totally send them an email AND write a letter! Thanks for doing this! Hey can I have you do a guest post on my blog? You are the one who started it so I want you to be a guest on my blog! Tell me what you think about it! Thanks!
    Chloe

    • Thanks so much for the support, Chloe! It is super sad to see how far AG has come – not in a good way. πŸ™
Oh, I’d be honored to do that! Just let me know some more details – here or through my contact form and we can set it up! Thank you! πŸ™‚
      ~Jaclynn~

  • What an awesome idea! πŸ˜€ I’m definitely going to write to AG. How do you add buttons to your blog? (Mine is on blogger, not wordpress)

    • Thanks so much! πŸ˜€
Oh, I’m not sure how to do it on blogger… Sorry! :/
      ~Jaclynn~

    • On blogger you ho into layout and add a gadget. Choose image. The dialogue box will ask for a title, caption, http link (copy and paste the url for this post there), if you want to upload a picture or find one via url.
If you save the button and upload, you”ll want to resize it first to 150×150 pxl.
      Hope that helps.

  • This is great! I like the idea of flooding them with letters and emails. I know their Facebook page kind of blew up with comments about this latest atrocity (although some were irate and mean).

I’m sharing this post on Facebook.

  • Button firmly affixed to my blog. πŸ™‚

  • Should I write to the customer service email AG gives or a different one? I definitely want to write, I’m just not sure where to….

  • Wonderful Jaclynn! I have decided to write to them too. All these new events are unfortunate. I really don’t understand the whole ‘sewn on underwear’ thing. I mean, what is the point? I don’t think that there has ever been a difficulty with the underwear. i mean, who does this affect, 2% of AG lovers? And even if it does affect a lot, it is not like they even have to take of the underwear in the first place. I am really disappointed. AG does not give a reason, yet says they would never make a change without careful consideration. That seems hypocritical to me, since they won’t give the reasons for their careful consideration. And this will affect Maryellen. I would have wanted her, but I won’t buy a doll with sewn-on underwear.

  • Thank you so much for this – it really needs to be said, even now. I know I am commenting late, etc. but I bought an American Girl doll from American Girl earlier this year. Though I come from New Zealand, I am a MAJOR American Girl fan and I am willing to pay that much for a doll (unfortunately, shipping an American Girl doll to New Zealand costs over $300.00). When she finally came, I was so excited!! I gently lifted the lid of the box and smoothed her beautiful hair. Then I lifted her dress. Words cannot explain ow shocked, surprised, and especially, saddened I was. Spending that much on what I thought was a beautiful, quality doll! I really wish i could do something about it, but now it’s too late – I can’t return it or exchange it without paying a LOT of money!

  • yes! I heard that there doing plastic heads! the ones that you can smush!

    doing this!
