Bloggers Are People, Too
I’ve been known to make some posts here about some deep-ish topics. Today is one of those days.
Over the past nearly 4 years of blogging, I’ve come to realize that people (in this case, our readers) tend to treat bloggers in a very rude way. They expect a lot from us. If we don’t follow through on posting something the day we said we would, we get mad at and/or yelled at.
This isn’t fair to us. We as bloggers first started our blogs as a fun thing to do. Like a hobby. It was meant to be something that we enjoy doing. It’s not supposed to be a job (unless that’s you’re goal for it). But over time, we come to really appreciate our readers and we tend to want to please them more than ourselves at times. So we make promises to make a particular post that they want and when we don’t follow through, they get mad at us.
To you bloggers; I know you know what I’m talking about. We’ve all experienced this at some point. The pressuring comments that never seem to stop asking “when will you post this?” or “when will you post that?” and even “Why didn’t you post this? You promised you would! It’s been forever!!” and then they might even sign their name as “a very angry__.”
It’s really hard to deal with this at times, at least it is for me. I know you all love Masquerade and I appreciate that more than I can say, I really do. But when I have people constantly asking me about it, it puts a lot of stress on me. And because I know how much you all want the next part, I keep saying, “Soon” or “This week!” But, guys, I never actually know for sure when I’ll be able to post it, but I’m always looking for an opportunity.
To you readers; I understand the excitement and the torture of waiting to read the next part or wanting the next episode in your favorite TV show. I’m a human, too, so yes, I understand these feelings. But guys, here’s the thing. We bloggers need you to remember that we are only human. We have lives outside of blogging and sometimes they get pretty hectic. When the busyness finally wears off, we just want a break. We need our days of rest without stressing ourselves out about making a post.
And hey, photo stories take an uber long time to make. I’ve spent entire days working on just one part. You have to get the dolls ready, find all the props, set up, find the right location/lighting you need, take the pictures, upload them, resize them, write the story, preview it – it all takes a huge chunk out of your day and by the end of it, you feel pretty worn out.
With Masquerade I shot out so many parts, one after another, and it was a ton of fun, but tiring. I not only got physically tired, but emotionally as well. I was tired of making photo stories. So I took a little break from that to post some photoshoots and what-not. I needed to post some things that I felt like posting. Because although we do post for our readers, we also post for ourselves. If we don’t keep up with also pleasing ourselves, then the fun of blogging is going to die away for us.
Basically all I’m asking is this, and it’s very simple;
Please, everyone, try to be a little more understanding. We (bloggers) have lives. We get busy. Life gets away from us, just like with anyone else in the world. So when photo stories suddenly take a break, try not to freak out. In most cases, it will be continued, but we just need a break.
And don’t only comment on posts asking when the next part will be. That’s not a pleasing question to read. It makes us groan and sigh and be like; “Ugh, I need to do this, but I’m so busy/I don’t want to right now…” And then we feel guilty.
That’s another thing. We do feel bad to make you guys wait so long. And we feel really bad when we can’t post when we said we would.
And I’m going to admit here, that I am guilty of putting this pressure on other bloggers, too, but I have tried extremely hard not to be that way anymore. Usually if I ever do that, I do it in a dying sort of funny way that’s super dramatic. Something along the lines of; “NOOO I CAN NOT WAIT OH MY GOSH HURRY AND POST THE NEXT PART BEFORE I DIE!!! XD”
Just an example 😉
Again, please, be more understanding. It would mean the world to me and I’m sure any other blogger out there! 🙂
I just wanna say really quick before I sign off that I am by no means trying to be or sound mean. This is an issue I’ve seen in the blogging community and personally experienced and issues like these need to be addressed before they get worse. I love you all so much and I don’t know what I would do without you! Your comments make my day and I do not want to discourage any of you from making comments. We bloggers thrive on comments. It’s why we’re still around. It’s why we still post. So please, keep those comments coming and keep them nice 🙂
Amen, sister. Although I don’t get a lot of comments bugging me and pleading me to post something, I definitely understand what you mean. Blogging takes up a lot of time and effort and sometimes we feel exhausted.
I love your “deep” posts and I’m so glad you addressed this, because it’s important. 🙂
I’m glad you agree with me! I just had a girl post 2 rude comments yesterday and she was all mad at me and I’m like – that’s it. It’s time for a post. Ugh. People can be so rude sometimes…
Awe, I’m glad! Thank you! 🙂
Very good post! I haven’t really gotten any comments like that on my blog before, but I do know how exhausting it can be to keep writing posts. (Lol, I feel like I’m just copying Grace’s comment. Sorry!)
And I can’t remember if I’ve ever left comments like that on this blog, but if I have, I want to apologize. :/
Thanks, Lizzy! 🙂
Oh, no, from my memory, you’ve never made a comment like that. You’re always super nice! 🙂
Haha, no problem, Lizzy! Your comment is perfect. 🙂
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for this post!!!!!!!!1 AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank YOU! 🙂
Yes, so much! It can be so annoying when readers just comment asking about the next part. Like, COME ON!! XD Great post, Dee! 🙂
LOL! Thanks, Cookie! 🙂
Good post! I’m sorry if I ever have posted a comment like that. 🙁
I’ve been thinking about starting a doll blog, do you think I should? I think it’d be fun to have my own blog, do you recommend starting a blog?
Thanks, Jane! And it’s okay! 🙂
I think you should totally do it if you really want to! 😀
Thanks for the advice, Jaclynn! 😀
THIS IS SO TRUE. I’ve gotten so many comments asking me when I’m going to continue Serpents, and if I’m going to post the next part soon. Every time someone asks, I feel more guilty, because I know it’s been a long time. But I haven’t been able to go to the cave I need to shoot the next part!
I’m sorry people have treated you this way — and I’m sorry if I’ve ever said something like that.
This is a really important subject, and you did a wonderful job explaining it. 🙂
Oh, yes!! I had a similar problem when making Fire Cove. I finally just decided to make a cave in my house so I could get it up sooner. I felt bad to have everyone waiting for so long. :/
Thanks so much, Loren! That means a lot 🙂
P.S. You never said anything like that 😉
It inclueds a CAVE??? AWESOME. in the gems of power, http://hiddenhollowagcrafts.blogspot.com/p/the-gems-of-power.html ) I made the cave with a big blanket. And you could put boxes and lumpy stuff underneath it, to look cragy and rocky. 🙂 sorry about those comments asking for more serpents, its just so EXCITING.
Very guiltily, ~Olive
Yes! My sister DREADS those comments on The Guiding Compass. Even when she posts the part, I’ve seen some comments saying things like, “Too short!” or “Make it longer next time!” It’s not very encouraging. 🙁
I love posts like these because you have a great way of wording everything right to the point. 🙂
I’ve seen those comments! It’s really sad when people just complain and don’t say anything nice. 🙁
Awe, thank you so much! 🙂
Nice post. I understand but we should also try are hardest to post on time. Because we are only human shouldn’t be our excuse. We can’t follow all of what Yahweh(God) says because we are only human but we can try! Overall I’m sorry that it happens to you a lot. I hope I didn’t sound rude in anyway I just giving out my opinion.?
Thank you! I see what you’re saying, but I didn’t say that my excuse was “we’re only human” I was saying, we are only human as in – we have feelings, too, so those people need to be more understanding to that, because sometimes they treat us like nothing and like we don’t understand. So that’s what I was saying. 🙂
Thanks, Kiki! 🙂
Your welcome! Oh, I understand now! Sorry about that? I’ve never had rude commenters like that so so can’t relate. I have had people ask before?
Ps: you also shouldn’t promise something if you are never going to fulfill it. I can understand though if something unexpectedly came up? This is just my advice.
Oh, when I make those promises I intend to keep and fulfill them, but life gets in the way and I am unable to fulfill them. 😉
Yeah, I kinda thought that was the case!?
This was a good post! I do this sometimes and i should be more patient. Don’t worru, this post didn’t sound mean! Plus i am not really keeping up with my blog because i am out of space. But i have been making videos. Thank you for bringing this up! Your friend, Mya?
Thank you, Mya! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I agree completely. I have gotten some not very nice comments on The Guiding Compass. Each one makes me feel more guilty, but it actually makes me not want to work on the next part even more. Blogging should feel like your hobby. It should be fun, not feel like a chore, which is what sometimes it turns into. Especially when you create a photo story series. I know that full well. LOL.
Awesome post, Dee! . I am glad you addressed this. It is a bigger problem then commenters realize. (hugs)
I totally understand that! I’ve had that feeling a lot before… 😉
Thanks, Hershey! I really felt that it needed to be addressed. I’m really happy with the response this post is getting 🙂
I’m very sorry I signed my name as “Avery angry Abby” I didn’t mean for you to have to make a whole new post. I am just tired of waiting!!!! I need more mascarade!!! So truthfully I am annoyed that you have out it off for a whole month, then keep promising it and it never comes! Sorry anyway!
I was wondering if I would hear from you…
I appreciate your apology, but what I don’t appreciate is being yelled at. How would you feel if you got super busy and couldn’t post something and people were yelling at you cause they were mad you didn’t do what they wanted?
I understand that you’re annoyed. I’ve been there, too. All I’m asking is that you be a little more understanding. I have a wedding that we are preparing for plus all sorts of other busyness. I’ve been spending time with my brother who will be moving out. I just started a job. These things come first. They aren’t nearly as important as making a post on any of my blogs.
So I’m not “putting it off.” I am simply too busy right now to put the hours of work into making the next part.
I will forgive you and offer you a second chance to be a little nicer. But if you leave any more rude comments, I will have no other choice but to block you. I want everyone here to treat each other kindly – to treat others as we would want to be treated.
Definitely! I feel like that with my videos on YT, when people ask when I’ll upload again I plan for soon but honestly you never know, sometimes you’re just plain busy, and even if you’re not doing anything whether it’s blogging or editing videos or writing, it takes time and energy and sometimes you just don’t have enough! Especially when you put a lot of hard work into something and it seems like it’s not enough, too short, too long, or just it doesn’t turn out how you planned. I really hope I haven’t made any comments like that here or anywhere, though I’m sure I probably have somewhere at some point.
EXACTLY! A lot of times on my off days from busyness, I’m just tired and want to relax! And everyone needs a breather 😉
I can’t recall a comment like that from you 🙂
oh boy, now I’m feeling VERY guilty. 😛
LOL! Awe, don’t worry, Olive! 🙂
I completely understand, when I still ran my doll blog it was so stressful to make photostory series for me because they take a LOT of time and effort, and it’s really discouraging when people are mean to you/pressuring you for the next part…:/ Same with just normal stories!
Sorry if I ever did anything like that!
Yeah, it’s definitely hard… 🙁
No worries – even if you did, I don’t remember 🙂
I completely understand. (Realizes she hasn’t posted in 2 months, oops XD)
LOL! Oh dear! XD
Thank you SO much for posting this. <3 I haven't had that many bad comments but some of them aren't the best. 😛
Sure thing 🙂
Yeah, I haven’t had a ton of super bad ones either, but they have shown up, unfortunately…
I love your posts like this, Jaclynn. They’re always so well-thought out and important. 🙂 Well I’ve never gotten a ton of them, I’ve gotten one or two comments like that before. They are pretty discouraging. 🙁
I’m so sorry you’ve had comments like that, too. I know how it feels. 🙁 I hope I’ve never said anything like that when I first came to your blog (9 or 10-year-old me was a little crazy 😉 ), and I apologize if I have. 🙂
Once again, I love your posts on things like this. Wonderfully written, Jaclynn! Thanks again for posting it. 🙂
Awe, thank you so much, Madi! And I’m sorry you’ve gotten comments like that 🙁
Oh, don’t worry. I doubt you did, but even if you did – I’ve forgotten. You’re super sweet 🙂
Thanks so much again, Madi! <3
Hi! This is a wonderful post! Right on the money with how it can be sometimes. While I haven’t had many angry comments, I have felt pressure to post from people who do not comment publicly. It’s terrible and saps all motivation to work on the blog. As you said our blogs start as a fun hobby; when they start to feel like real work…who wants to do it? Plus the pressure can cause writer’s block; never a good thing.
Patience is key for readers and writers. Writers, be good to yourself and fulfill your responsibilities that are not blog related. Tend to school or job, activities, family, etc. When those are done, creative juices and ideas will start flowing again. Readers, think about your own lives and responsibilities and what you need to accomplish before you are allowed to visit your favorite sites. Then if you don’t find something new, pause for a moment wishing the writer well and hoping they find some spare time again soon.
We do love our readers and followers. We want them to be as happy as we are with the final product and try not to post inferior quality items. Quality takes time. No one should sacrifice quality for quantity.
I love seeing all the photo stories on all the different blogs: The Guiding Compass, Serpents, Hang on to Hope and yours, Masquerade. I would hate to see all you wonderful talented bloggers out there stop posting because people are being unkind. I don’t mind waiting. It’s worth the wait! It gives us all something to look forward to which is fun too! Also, as a reader/blogger myself I totally get that life gets busy. Sometimes I even get too busy to read all my fave blogs! Then I have to take a day to catch up on everything. This is supposed to be a fun doll community. No one should feel guilty or drive themselves to exhaustion. Great post Jaclynn!!

Hey Jaclynn! I made a new button, and I was wondering if you could update it. You can find it here: https://theupstairsgirl.wordpress.com/button-swap/
Thanks s’much! 🙂
Woops! I accidentally wrote Loren instead of Jaclynn! Where is my brain today? XD
LOL! It’s okay! I went ahead and fixed it for you 😉
I’ll update your button ASAP! 🙂
