Copying Is Wrong

I’m here today to talk to you bloggers about copying.
We all know that copying is wrong, so why do people still do it?? I go to several blogs each day. Most of them use their own unique ideas ( as far as I know) and a few others take ideas from other blogs. I’ve seen blogs using the exact same titles with the same concept as another blogger. Some name it something different, but use the same story or theme.
I visit a few blogs that I know for a fact have copied me and my friend. It’s not right and I do not tolerate it at all. Let’s do a little example of copying.

So let’s say you copy one of my photostory series. You never see me comment on my blog, so you may think “Oh, she never comments on my blog, so I can make this.” Just because I don’t comment on your blog, doesn’t mean I don’t look at it. I rarely comment on blogs anymore- just because it takes too much time. So, I could very well find out that you have copied me. Or maybe even somebody who reads my blog and your blog, could let me know that I have been copied. The point is- no matter what wrong thing you do- whether it’s copying, lying, stealing, etc. you will always get caught. Somebody will always find out.
Here’s another example:

Say there are two painters and they each are sitting next to each other with their easels and they have to paint the scenery in front of them. One painter is starting to paint and he’s doing really good, but the other painter starts to copy the other’s painting, instead of looking at the actual scenery and painting their own thing. It’s exactly the same with blogging.

Does it make it right to copy if nobody finds out? No.
Does it make right up until the point somebody does find out? Of course not.

Copying is all around wrong. And I must tell you the truth- I really don’t like it when I see that somebody has copied me. It makes me very sad and upset. Someone has taken my idea, one of the names I use in my photostory series (this happened at the same time that series was going on and that person reads my blog), pictures I have used, and it’s very upsetting, because someone took my original idea and used it on their blog. I don’t understand why people have to copy. Can’t they just get their own original and unique idea from their own mind instead of stealing someone else’s? πŸ™

So, please all of you bloggers out there- don’t copy. It’s really hurtful to the person who’s being copied and it’s just not right. And readers- if you ever notice that someone has been copied- PLEASE let the person who copied and the person who is being copied know right away!

Thank you all for taking the time to read this! πŸ™‚

  • I’m sorry that someone copied your content. It’s really sad when people copy πŸ™ I’m o.k. with someone using my ideas as long as they give me credit and ask πŸ™‚

  • Oh no! I hate when people copy you and don’t give credit (it’s happened to me before). Just wondering, but did I copy you?

  • That was very interesting πŸ™‚

  • I’m so glad you called some attention to this! I don’t have a blog of my own, but I have noticed this on other girls’ blogs. Copying is wrong, and it takes away all the fun from photostories and other posts when they aren’t original!

    • Thank you! Yeah, that’s exactly the way I feel! It makes the original post so much less special when there’s a copied one πŸ™
      ~Jaclynn~

  • Sorry you’re getting copied πŸ™

I too, hate it when people copy.
Like, for instance,my stories. I let someone read my story and then they use done of the exact sand lines I created and called it their own.
It’s really irritating and I’m really sorry it happened to you.
And so now,I’m always hesitant to share my stories with people in fear they might steal it and publish what I’m writing.

I really love the painting example you gave! You made it clear and it was well spoken πŸ™‚
    Have a great night!!!

  • I hate it when I see other people copy other people’s ideas! I’m working on a watermark right now for my photos. I hope you weren’t talking about me, if you were, just tell me the problem and I will totally fix it, if it’s like a name, or anything else, I just want you to know, I’d fix it in a heartbeat! πŸ™‚
I’m the same with commenting, it takes a while to comment on everyone’s blog πŸ˜›

  • I am so sorry this happened to you! Please tell me if you feel like I am copying you at all or anything.
While we are on this subject, your blog is one of my favorites, and I am trying to make a page on my blog where I can write all my favorite blogs, and aadd links.
Can I use your logo above your link?
Also, I want to do some best of etsy posts about doll clothes, and I would like to add some of yours. Is it Ok if I use a few of your pictures if I link to your Etsy?

    • Oh, absolutely! You can grab my button and use that πŸ™‚
What pictures exactly? From my Etsy Shop? Well, I guess so! As long as you link to me πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜€
      Thank you for asking!
      ~Jaclynn~

      • Oh, thank you for reminding me about the button. Completely forgot about it.

Yeah, from your Etsy shop. I would basically write it like this.

        Picture
Name of Product Price of Product
        Shop name and link
        What I like about it

Ok, I am in the process of opening my own Etsy shop, and already have a blog, so I get the whole “but link back to me” thing. πŸ™‚

  • Also, my sister and I are in the process of creating an Etsy shop, and I was wondering if you had any tips?

    • That’s great, Kathleen! πŸ˜€
Well, when you’re ready to start your business, you can set up an Etsy shop. When you list your items there’s a section where you add tags (which helps people find your items), so be sure to add things that people might be searching for. I always include things like: β€œamerican girl, doll, doll clothes,” etc.
Also, you should get some business cards made to send out with your orders or to pass out to friends.
I hope this little bit of advice helps you! Let me know if there’s anything else you need to know and I will try answer as best I can! πŸ™‚

      • πŸ™‚ Thank you! Your Etsy shop is the one I showed my sister that made her agree to open one. And one of my favorites. I have been planning on making and selling Disney doll dresses for a long time, and then I noticed that you had an Etsy shop, and I just think, “Oh, gosh. i hope she doesn’t think I’m copying her. And then I saw this post. So, I would just like to say, I LOVE YOUR ETSY SHOP, and if I accidentally do copy whether in description or whatever, email me and tell me. And I really don’t mean to copy be making disney dresses. They will be sewn, though so…

Right now I am in the process of listing an item, and just need to actually finish sewing it. I added tags like American Girl, Dolls, Doll Clothes, Doll Costumes, Disney and Dolls, etc. Do you think those are good?

        Ok. That I can do.

Ok! One more question. Do you think selling patterns for doll clothes would be a good idea?

        Kathleen

P.S. That was SO helpful. Thank you very much!

  • In my opinion, if a blogger is copying another person, they should just quit blogging. I mean, isn’t the point of blogging to have fun? The fun for me, anyway, is thinking of ideas, taking photos, and writing up posts! So if someone is copying someone else’s idea, is that really fun for them?

    • Yeah, I see your point. Cause if you aren’t coming up with your OWN ideas and just copying other people’s, where is the fun in that? πŸ˜•
      ~Jaclynn~

  • I’m so sorry! Sometimes I use other people’s post for inspiration, but I will give them credit or ask permission! Is that OK?

  • Copying is definitely not a good practice. Especially if the person in question is copying photos or text directly from your blog. I do worry about this because I do not watermark my photos – takes too much time.

Sometimes an idea will hit two or more bloggers at the same time and their posts will have the same theme without even realizing it. That’s not copying – just coincidence. Outfit of the Week is an example. I know several bloggists who have an OOTW post. The acronym is the same for them, but how they go about presenting the post is different. Our product reviews and doll find and “look what I got” posts are like that.

Then there are “inspired by” posts. These are the ones that should have a link back to the originator. When we do Camp Doll Diaries activities and post about them.

With regard to our doll names though…I have seen a couple of bloggists who try to say you can’t even use my doll’s name. Well, that one I do not understand at all. Names are names available to everyone – that can’t be limited.

Hang in there. Remember to Keep Calm and Blog on. πŸ™‚

  • That’s ashame someone copied you. πŸ™

  • YES! Totally! This goes for anything!

It’s so terrible that someone copied you. Really sorry. πŸ™

    ~Lydia~ <3

  • Jaclynn, I am so very someone copied you. It is extremely annoying. Did I copy you?
please let me know if i did.
    ~KAyleigh~

  • Oh no!If I find out who that is,there going to get a virtual talking-to(maybe I’m joking,maybe I’m not)!!!

  • I hate it when people copy too. πŸ™
One of my friends ALWAYS copies me. Once, we entered an art contest together. She didn’t know what to draw at first, but I did. I drew a girl and her dog. Guess what? When she saw, she did too. I asked her if she’d copied me, but she denied it. I added a striped background.
The thing that makes me really mad is that I won second. She won first. (And I later saw that she used a striped background, too. πŸ™ )
I’m sorry that someone copied you. πŸ™ it’s horrible when you find that someone has copied your ideas. I hope that next time, they at Least ask.
    – Emmaly

  • Oh, that’s horrible! I’m so sorry, Jaclynn.

  • I know, right?! I get so upset when people copy each other. I had to start watermarking my photos because another blog, with a different title, was copying EVERY SINGLE BLOG POST OF MINE! Do you remember when we talked about that, Jaclynn? I was so upset. It’s horrible that someone copied you and your friend. Just remember that no matter how hard blogging can be, since the online world can be a dangerous and mean place, just keep sticking with what you love – no matter what!

Wait, just making sure, I haven’t, like, copied you at all, have I?

    ~Madison~

  • Hi Jaclynn!
This blog post was very good one and I agree with everything that you said, but I thought that something was missing…so while copying is very wrong, I myself think that there is a very big difference between copying and getting inspiration from somebody’s posts. So say that there was a post about your dolls having a tea party, and I saw that post and wanted to do something like it. I think that that would be alright just as long as I didn’t copy everything that the post had done, like have the same kind of tea and hairstyles and the dolls saying the same things. And maybe wait a little while too until the post is older so that people wont think that yo are purposefully coping the it. The blogging world was made to inspire people and give them ideas, and while doing the exact same thing and claiming it as your own is wrong, inspiration is a completely different thing. Hope you are understanding what I am saying:):):) Thanks for reading, and don’t hesitate to ell me if you disagree with something I said:)

  • And you could also say that you saw this blog post and you thought that that sounded fun so you decided to do something like it, too. Just not a copy of it.
