I Discovered Something Interesting!!

Today I wanted to get out my sister’s AG Doll Bin and just look through her stuff. Whenever I get it out I always look at her old catalog.

image

This is a picture of the front of the catalog. It’s the 1998 Holiday Catalog!

image

Who is that? Could it be? Yes, it’s Felicity’s horse, Penny in the Girl of Today section!!

She was called “American Girl Horse”. In this catalog Felicity doesn’t even have Penny or any stable-ish things, just her riding outfits.
I think it is SO weird and kinda cheap of AG to use an old Girl of Today Horse to be Penny. Why don’t they just make a brand new one?
Just in case you wanna know, here’s what it says about her:
“What a beauty! Braid her thick brown mane and tail, and stroke her velvety coat. Then position the royal blue saddle blanket and leather saddle, adjust the stirrups, take up the reins, and you’re off! Don’t forget to give her the name you’ve always dreamed of for a horse of your own.”
She sold for $58.

I just looked at a catalog that has “Penny” in it. Here’s something else interesting:

She is still called “American Girl Horse” and was sold for $75.
The description says:
“This beautiful horse looks just like Penny! Includes attached reins, a royal blue saddle blanket, and a faux leather saddle.”

This is all just so weird.. and can you believe how much they raised the price of her?? It’s ridiculous!

What are your thoughtsΒ aboutΒ this?

  • Wow, that’s an old catalog! It looks like a good conditioned one, too. All our catalogs are beat up(most, anyway), and they aren’t near that old!
But I did know that they sold Penny as ” American Girl Horse”. Kind, of weird, I know. But did you know that the horse that pulled Samantha’s sleigh in the catalog was also Penny?(or, American Girl Horse).
But they only made the stable and stuff after Felicity came back in the catalog and they made a movie of her.

    • LOL! Yes, it is! Aw, that’s sad! Poor AG catalogs πŸ™
Really?? I need to go that catalog right now! Be right back!
*Runs to other room and gis throught catalogs*
Aw, man! My catalog with Samantha in it doesn’t have a picture of that πŸ™
What do you mean “after she came back in the catalog”? Wasn’t she in every catalog until she retired?
It’s still really weird, though! And when I looked at Felicity’s page (again) I saw that it said “A horse for Felicity! See page 84.”
I wish that they made an ACTUAL and OFFICIAL Penny. Now I feel like I don’t even have Penny, but some other horse… :/
      ~Jaclynn~

      • Well, when Kaya debuted in 2002, Felicity was pulled from the catalogs with a note saying that she would now be an online exclusive. During this time several of her items and outfits were retired. She was later revamped with the release of her movie and Elizabeth Cole. I got that from the AG Wiki site. πŸ˜‰
Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that. She is really Penny. But how old is your Penny?

        • Oh, wow! That’s crazy! Well, no wonder I didn’t know that- I was only 3- LOLOL πŸ˜€ πŸ˜›
Ah, yes. I still need to go there πŸ™‚
Yeah, I know, but it feel kind weird now :/
I’ve had her for over 5 years- I got her in 2008 πŸ˜‰
          ~Jaclynn~

          • Hehe! Well, I just remember when Felicity came back. πŸ˜‰
            hehe! yes, you do!
So she isn’t a really old horse, which means she went in Felicity’s section of the catalog. πŸ˜‰
            ~Christian Homeschooler

          • LOL! πŸ˜›
Yeah, she’s not that old. I still wish that she was ACTUALLY Penny, though. You know what I mean? πŸ˜‰
            ~Jaclynn~

          • Christian Homeschooler-I remember when Felicity came back in the catalog too! I vividly remember the catalog coming and I thought all her stuff just rocked! I never knew she was just online, though! Huh…learn something new every day!

  • Wow, you’d think that AG would care enough about one of their dolls to make them their own horse!! Poor Lissie… kinda like my dolls horses, since they were owned by someone else before me.
So did you get Felicity and Penny on the same day?
    ~Carli

    • I know, right? It’s so sad πŸ™
      Yeah… πŸ™
      Yes, I did. πŸ˜‰
      ~Jaclynn~

      • AG just drives me crazy sometimes… like that one time the 6 yr old girl went into the store to get her knock off AG doll’s hair done and the stylist refused to do it, so sad πŸ™
Oh okay, so she was a birthday present then?
        ~Carli

        • WHAT?!? Let me see if I’ve got this straight:
This little girl wanted to get her doll’s hair done and the stylist refused?!? Why in the world would they refuse? That is just wrong!!! πŸ™
          Yes, from my sister πŸ™‚
          ~Jaclynn~

          • Yep.
Well it was a fake doll. Like OG and My Life dolls, because it wasn’t a real doll, the stylist refused.
I know, right?! AG is so considerate and compassionate to little girls. Not.
Here’s a link to the story:
            http://oneofthosehorriblemoms.blogspot.com/2007/03/fake-out.html
            It’s really sad πŸ™
            Oh okay!
            ~Carli

          • Oh, well that makes more sense, but I still think it’s rude πŸ™
Thanks for linking to me, but I don’t think my mom would want me visiting that site. Thank you, though! πŸ™‚
From what you’ve told me it is really sad! I bet the little girl was so disappointed πŸ™
            ~Jaclynn~

  • Weird! My sister said when she was younger the historical dolls sold for $70-80!
How did you keep the catalogs in such GREAT condition?! Are all of them like that?
My mom says that old catalogs can sell (on ebay) up to $5 maybe even more! I said that is insane!

    • Oh, yeah! That sounds familiar!
In this catalog these were the prices of the different ways to buy the dolls:
      Doll and Paperback Book- $82
      Doll and Hardcover Book- $88
      Doll and Boxed Set- $144
Accessories were sold seperately for $20 πŸ˜‰
LOL! I don’t know! This one has been in a big rubbermaid bin in the garage for years and all of the others are just stored in our house. πŸ˜‰
Yep, pretty much! Some are in even better condition! πŸ˜›
Oh, really? I would think it’d be more! It doesn’t sound like a lot to me πŸ™‚
      ~Jaclynn~

      • oh ok!
Well I thought it would be a lot of money for a catalog but… this is AG we are talking about.

        • Hehe! Yeah, I would think one this old should sell for $10 or $15. Don’t you? πŸ™‚
          ~Jaclynn~

          • Yes, since it is more then a decade old.
did you get the newest catalog? There is not really much I like in there besides the dolls…
I HAD an older catalog with kanani in it only it kinda got umm…
            Fall-y apart-y cause I was little

          • Yes, I did! I LOVED it! All of the new stuff is so fun!! πŸ˜€
LOL! That’s a good way to put it πŸ˜›
            ~Jaclynn~

    • I ordered a couple of catalogs off of Ebay last year from 2002 and 2003. They were around $10-$15, I think. I love the old catalogs, it’s so fun to look through them at all the retired dolls and outfits. I think AG had better prices back then.
My oldest catalog that is originally mine, though (hope that made sense πŸ˜‰ ), is from when Caroline first came out. I used to have one from when Cecile and Marie-Grace first debuted, but I got rid of it for some reason… :-(.

  • Wow! I wish I had a catalog that old! My oldest is with Chrissa:) I used to have some before I got my first doll, but my mom only let me keep a couple because they were so torn after all of my looking through them. My cousin had given them to me; they even still had Samantha! Can you show us the rest of the catalog if that isn’t too much trouble? Thanks!

    • Aw, that’s sad! I had to get rid of some, too, but I kept a lot! I love to look back and see the retired items πŸ™‚
That was nice of her! Oh, I love Samantha! I hope to get her someday πŸ™‚
I was thinking of doing a video, but it might get too long. I will think about it- I would love to show you all the entire catalog πŸ˜€
      ~Jaclynn~

  • Oh yeah, that was definitely one of the worst things I’ve ever heard of AG doing! It was back in 2007 and the service may have changed but I doubt it πŸ™
Oh okay, I understand πŸ™‚ I’ll tell a little bit about it, her friend invited her to go to the AGP and she gladly accepted. They went to get their doll’s hair done (her friend had a real doll) and as they got up to the counter the stylist exclaimed “This isn’t a real doll!” And refused to style the dolls hair. My least favorite part of it all was this girl, saved up for her own doll and her mom didn’t want to tell her it was a knock-off and she learned from the stylist that it wasn’t a real doll, so she stopped playing with that doll πŸ™
Oh yeah, her mom said on her blog that she was devastated. I felt so bad when I read it :'(
    ~Carli

    • Well, I hope so! I mean just because it’s not an AG doll doesn’t mean they can’t do her hair! They’re getting paid for it! πŸ˜›
      WOOOW!! That is SO MEAN!!
      Oh, that’s sad πŸ™
I bet she was! I would be furious!
Do you think this story is really true? It just sounds so mean and wrong. πŸ™
      ~Jaclynn~

      • I know, right? Open your eyes AG it’s money!!!! πŸ˜›
It’s just plain cruel!!! I mean, she was only 6… πŸ™
        Yeah πŸ™
I would be too, only I would complain!! But if her mom did complain which she did (it was in newspapers too) the lady may have gotten fired.
It does, but I believe it, only because of the story being in the news and all. And I heard about a similar story in the same AGP (NY) and a girl lost her bag. They went to costumer service and the lady there didn’t help at all. One lady even said ” Oh, we’ll somebody probably stole it.” and walked into a room in the back to talk to some friends. So then they went home and a week later they get a all from AG saying that they finally looked at the security cameras and they saw the guy who took her bag. What he did was he went into the store alone and grabbed her bag then went out of the store, then came back in with his wife and daughter to get her dolls ear pierced. So if they would have looked WHEN the girl was there, they would have caught him when he came back into the store. The workers there were seasonal, but that was no excuse. It really showed me to keep my eyes open when I’m in the AGP and to keep you’re bag with you at all times.
        ~Carli

        • LOLOLOL!! πŸ˜›
          Yeah, that’s so sad πŸ™
Oh, I would, too! It’s just wrong!
Ooooh! I remember you telling me about that before! That’s awful! πŸ™
          Yeah, same here πŸ˜‰
          ~Jaclynn~

      • I heard somewhear that it turned out it was false, but I don’t know for certain.
Still, AG can be very nasty at times. Mom won’t let me buy things from AG anymore, I have to buy stuff from ebay, since she doesn’t want to give money to it. It was a very good company when Pleasant Company was in charge. Not any more!

        • Oh, really? Hmm… I don’t know what to think now! πŸ˜•
Oh, wow! That’s sad! Well, not everyone is bad and mean. I’m sure there are some very nice people working for them. Like at LA everyone that’s helped me has seemed very nice πŸ™‚
          ~Jaclynn~

    • Carli, When I went their last year I saw a girl with a non-AG getting her hair done.

  • I think I like the old one describing her then the new… More to read… Trying not to go of topic LOL!

  • My comments never get posted:(

  • Hehe-I found it! Never mind my last comment!

  • That’s not old! Not unless I’m getting old :(. It’s from the year I was born.

  • Jaclynn, Are you okay? I have not heard from you in a while…
The tea party is in 8 days the AG one that is! I told you before it was on the 21 but I got the date wrong!

    • Hi, Grace!
Yes, I’m doing just fine. I’ve just been crocheting a lot, so I haven’t done any posting for a while.
I am going to try to have something posted tomorrow. It’s just been WAY too long! πŸ˜‰
Oh, cool! You’ll have SO much fun there! πŸ˜€
      ~Jaclynn~

  • WOW! That is an OLD catalog! It’s really cool to see some of it, though.
That’s really weird about “Penny”. I never noticed it, but now I don’t like it. They should have one horse for the My AGs, and a seperate horse that’s Penny.
My cousin used to have “Penny”, and I remember her coat was super velvety!
